Climate adaptation of pre-Viking societies

چکیده
Understanding how the Viking societies were impacted by past climate variability and they adapted to it has hardly been investigated. Here, we have carried out a new multi-proxy investigation of lake sediments, including geochemical palynological analyses, reconstruct changes in temperature agricultural practices pre-Viking Southeastern Norway during period between 200 1300 CE. The periods 200–300 800–1300 CE warmer than 300–800 period, which is known as “Dark Ages Cold Period”. This cold was punctuated century-scale more temperate intervals, dominated cultivation cereals hemp (before 280 CE, 420–480 580–700 after 800 CE). In between, intervals livestock farming. Our results demonstrate that changed their strategy response Late Antiquity. • Record from same sediment archive. colder SE Norway. Phases grazing are synchronous with warm Pre-Viking way living adapt variability.

and necromancy; and magic as entertainment. Readers of this journal will be particularly interested in her section on medical magic. Jolly explains that this was an especially "fuzzy" area. Medieval medicine embraced both a material and spiritual understanding of illness in which physical and religious factors played a part. Within this context, it is often difficult to distinguish magical medi...
متن کاملManaging Climate Change Refugia for Climate Adaptation
Refugia have long been studied from paleontological and biogeographical perspectives to understand how populations persisted during past periods of unfavorable climate. Recently, researchers have applied the idea to contemporary landscapes to identify climate change refugia, here defined as areas relatively buffered from contemporary climate change over time that enable persistence of valued ph...
متن کاملThe Climate Adaptation Frontier
Climate adaptation has emerged as a mainstream risk management strategy for assisting in maintaining socio-ecological systems within the boundaries of a safe operating space. Yet, there are limits to the ability of systems to adapt. Here, we introduce the concept of an ―adaptation frontier‖, which is defined as a socio-ecological system’s transitional adaptive operating space between safe and u...
متن کاملAdaptation to Climate Change
We investigate the effect of climate change on population growth in 18th and 19th century Iceland. We find that annual temperature changes help determine the population growth rate in preindustrial Iceland: a year 1◦C cooler than average drives down population growth rates by 0.57% in each of the next two years, for a total effect of 1.14%. We also find that 18th and 19th century Icelanders ada...
متن کاملFunding climate adaptation strategies with climate derivatives
Climate adaptation requires large capital investments that could be provided not only by traditional sources like governments and banks, but also by derivatives markets. Such markets would allow two parties with different tolerances and expectations about climate risks to transact for their mutual benefit and, in so doing, finance climate adaptation. Here we calculate the price of a derivative ...
